Detroit Free Press Marathon Coming Through Boston-Edison

Tuesday, October 12, 2021 10:43 AM | Gregory Sikora (Administrator)

Dear Neighbor,

This Sunday, October 17th, The Detroit Free Press Marathon will route runners through Boston Edison as part of the new course this year.

This is an independent event and not sanctioned by the HBEA. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding as road closures can cause inconveniences to those who live along the route. Below is some additional information regarding road closures & logistics that may impact you on race day.

Q. When do road closures begin?

A. Barricades will start going up as early as 4am; however, barricades do not start being secured until approximately 6:00am by DPD. If you need to move a barricade to enter/exit your home prior to it being secured by the Police, please return the barricade to its place after driving through. The event uses what is called a “Rolling Open/Closure” plan so that roads can be opened as soon as the last participant crosses the area. We expect the roads in BE to be open by approximately 10:30am.

Q. When will runners be passing through Boston Edison?

A. We expect runners in our neighborhood between 7:15-9:45am, with the “pack” being between 8:00-9:00am. During that time, it will be extremely difficult for vehicles to cross any section of the course safely, so please make prior arrangements with your vehicle if you need access during these times.

Q. Can I park my car on the street along the race route?

A. Please do not park your car on the street along the race route in order to create a clear path for the runners. There is a risk that your vehicle may be ticketed or towed if it is parked along the course. If possible, we recommend to move your vehicle by midnight Saturday night.

Q. Where is the fluid station located?

A. The fluid station will be located on LaSalle between Chicago & Longfellow. There will be 3 tables set up on either side of the street with Gatorade & water for the runners. Exact placement of the tables will be determined the morning of the race.

Q. What side of W. Boston & Chicago Blvds will be closed for runners?

A. The route will close down the south side of W. Boston Blvd. On Chicago between Woodrow Wilson & Second, the route will go against the flow of traffic and will close down the north side of the boulevard.

The course map thru Boston Edison can be found above and online at https://www.freepmarathon.com/

We are still seeking volunteers (35-50 in total!) to assist with the fluid station. Volunteers should arrive around 5:30am to assist with set-up and should conclude by 10:00am.

All volunteers will receive a hooded fleece jacket (see photo below) as a thank you for their time.

If you are interested in volunteering (including family, friends or coworkers) please fill out the form through the button below and you will be contacted directly with specific instructions on how to officially sign up with the Detroit Free Press and day-of responsibilities.
