HBEA 5K Run/Walk Made History and is Pride of the Boston-Edison Historic Community!By: Fatoumata Cissoko-Willis, HBEA 5K Run/Walk, Chair We are in full celebration mode and beaming with pride as we made history on Saturday, September 24, 2022, with the successful execution of the first ever HBEA 5K Run/Walk for residents of Boston-Edison and the Metro Detroit community at large. This event was established to achieve a number of goals, among which was to bring people in the community out to see one another, get in some good cardio, enjoy the beautiful architecture of the magnificent homes and celebrate our Journey to 100 (the Historical Boston-Edison Association turns 100 in 2026). An equally significant goal and accomplishment was being able to give our event proceeds to Brilliant Detroit, a local community non-profit organization that “creates kid success neighborhoods by providing holistic services for kids 0-8 around health, family support, and education.” The HBEA 5K Run/Walk had over 150 in attendance and was as festive as you could imagine with DJ Invisible (resident Carl Hollier) playing music to pump up the crowd – runners and cheerers alike. The 5K course began in Voigt Park at Longfellow and 2nd and weaved runners along Chicago Blvd, W. Boston Blvd, Atkinson, Edison and back to Voigt Park. All participants, runners and walkers, were cheered on as they crossed the finish line and were greeted with congratulations and finisher medals. We did not forget the younger runners! We celebrated them in their four laps around Voigt Park during the Kids Fun Run and cheered them on to the finish line as well. The day was closed with recognition and award to the top runners (women, men, masters-women, masters-men and youth), acknowledgment of the hard work of DPD and all the volunteers who came together to support this huge endeavor, sponsors and local donors. A special thanks and appreciation to the following individuals on the committee who worked with me tirelessly over the course of this year to bring you the HBEA 5K Run/Walk, a now established signature event of Boston-Edison.
