All exterior work on homes in the District must be approved by the Historic Commission. If you hire a contractor, he or she may obtain the permit as part of the contract, but it is ultimately the homeowner's responsibility to ensure all work has been approved.
The following general guidelines come from the Historic Commission's website. Also see the HDC step-by-step guide on making exterior changes to your house, and the HDC brochure, What you need to know...Introduction and Application Requirements.
More information on project approval is available online at the Detroit Historic District Commission and at the Buildings, Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Department. Also see the HDC brochure, What you need to know...
This list is not all inclusive. If you do not see your project on this list, CALL THE COMMISSION!!
