BE in the News

It's not only the residents of Boston-Edison who think the neighborhood is a great place to live.  The Metro Times calls Boston-Edison "one of the most appealing neighborhoods in Detroit," and "one of Detroit's richest sources of history;" and Detroit Home readers voted Boston-Edison the area's "Best Historic Neighborhood." We agree. In addition to the The Metro Times, both The Detroit News and Model D has profiled Boston-Edison and the surrounding area.  Curbed Detroit covers the neighborhood extensively, and Experience Detroit includes the neighborhood on its tour of historic neighborhoods.

MI Dream Home: Former Kresge family estate in historic Boston Edison for sale | By: Cal Abbo, The Detroit News

A 16,000-square-foot mansion isn't the only impressive feature on the historical Kresge family estate. The property also includes two carriage houses, a playhouse, koi ponds, a rock garden, a tennis court, a greenhouse, a gazebo, several fountains, bamboo groves and a small bridge.

The property is only a few miles from downtown Detroit and is just a short drive to the Midtown museum district or any of the sports arenas.

"It's located at the very keyhole of the Detroit freeway system," Robert Kortze, a member of the Stockton Team at Keller Williams Realty, said. "Only minutes away from I-75, I-94, and I-96, the Lodge and Davidson freeways make suburban shopping within a 15-minute drive."

The mansion includes 14 bedrooms, 10 gas fireplaces, and eight bathrooms, a library, a music room, indoor fountains, a bank vault and a large secret room. The carriage houses can fit up to nine cars in total. Each has a two-bedroom apartment on its upper floor.

The Detroit News, Michael H. Hodges (Touring Detroit in your car)

After a while, there's only so much lockdown a person can take. And while walks around the neighborhood are fine, after a while it gets old.And who hasn't exhausted their store of indoor activities and busy work?So here's a modest proposal: Get in your car and tool around the city of Detroit.

Drive around the mansion district west of Woodward between Edison and W. Boston, and you can't help but be struck by the buckets of money that must have been sloshing around Detroit in the teens and 1920s.

Two noteworthy houses by Albert Kahn are worth seeking out -- 150 W. Boston, built in 1915 for department store magnate Benjamin Siegel, and 610 Longfellow, which Kahn designed in 1910 for James Couzens, the Ford executive who went on to be both Detroit mayor and U.S. senator.

Detroit Free Press, June 8, 2019, Judy Rose (A look inside the Kresge mansion)

The grand, white Mediterranean Revival home that S.S Kresge built on Boston Boulevard will be listed for sale next weekend for the first time in 25 years.

At more than 20,000 square feet, it’s one of Detroit’s largest mansions, and it sits on what’s believed to be the city’s largest residential lot — almost four acres, wrapped with a decorative iron fence.

What’s more, the 1914 mansion, designed by the Cleveland firm of Meade and Hamilton, is in excellent condition.

The Detroit News, April 11, 2019, Maureen Feighan (Motown, Berry Gordy Jr., and Boston-Edison)

In the corner of a spacious pool house in Detroit’s Historic Boston-Edison District, where Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. once entertained music royalty, hangs a photo of Gordy himself, laughing with pop superstar Michael Jackson.

The picture, situated in the very spot it was taken decades ago in the 1980s, is one of dozens of images that hang throughout the “Motown Mansion,” the home Gordy owned from the 1960s through the early 2000s. The photos tell the story of a place that’s more than a house. It’s a legacy.

"There are many beautiful homes in Detroit,” said new owner Alan Brown, who bought the mansion in 2017. “There are a small number of truly historic mansions with the design integrity this has, but there’s only one Motown Mansion that has this legacy attached to it."

The Detroit News, November 15, 2018. (2018 Holiday Home Tour Preview Party)

Built in 1917 by lumber magnate Nels Michelson, the iconic Motown Mansion in Detroit's Historic Boston-Edison Historic District has hosted everyone from politicians to movie stars. Berry Gordy was the fourth owner of the 10,000 square foot mansion. And while it won't be featured on the soldout Boston-Edison Holiday Home on Dec. 9, it will open its doors for the preview party on Dec. 8.

Maureen Feighan, The Detroit News, September 13, 2018 (2018 Junior League of Detroit Designers' Show House)

Actor Hill Harper chuckles at the size of the investment he's had to make to bring the iconic Charles T. Fisher mansion back to life in Detroit's Historic Boston-Edison District, but it's worth it, he said on Thursday. And he hopes there is a spillover effect.

"If it inspires one person, or 10 people or 100 people or 1,000 people to do the same thing, in this neighborhood or around the city of Detroit, then we're going to be providing jobs and beautification and that helps communities," said Harper, standing in the living room. "...This house, to me, is Detroit's White House."
