Recycling in Detroit

Curbside Recycling

Curbside recycling is now available in Detroit! To take part, residents must sign up online or call (844) 2-DETROIT (233-8764) to request a blue 64-gallon recycling container. There is a one-time fee of $25 for the container. In Boston-Edison, recyclables are picked up every two weeks, on the same Wednesday as bulk trash, throughout the neighborhood.

All recyclables can be mixed in the provided container for single-stream collection – no sorting is necessary. Accepted materials are:

  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Newspaper, cardboard and office paper
  • Plastics (#1-7)
  • Glass bottles and jars

Items that cannot be recycled in the curbside container include plastic bags, take-out containers, polystyrene (Styrofoam), paint, automotive fluids, car batteries and pesticides. For disposal of hazardous substances, see the article, Some Trash Isn't "Trash".
