The Historic Boston-Edison Association, the oldest continuously operating neighborhood organization in Detroit will host its 80th Annual Dinner on Friday, May 18, 2007, 6:00 p.m. at Marygrove College (map here). The celebratory event will begin with a 6:00
p.m. cocktail reception featuring pianist Fran Hanna. Dinner will be served at 7:00 with music provided by the Marvin Jones Trio.
The Boston-Edison Historic District consists of a 36 block area containing approximately 900 distinct homes. The District is bordered by Boston Boulevard on the north, Edison Avenue on the South, Woodward Avenue on the east and Linwood on the west. In 2005, the Boston Edison Association celebrated its first 100 years the districts existence with a Centennial Celebration in Voigt Park. Voigt Park was named after Edward W. Voigt, a prominent figure in the investment
of Detroit, who began acquiring land in the Boston Edison District as early as 1884. Mr. Voigt laid out Boston and Chicago boulevards, as well as Atkinson, Edison, Longfellow and Calvert avenues and Glynn Court, comprising some of the best residential property in the city.
Notable former residents of the Boston Edison community include, Sebastian S. Kresge, Charles T. Fisher, Ira Grinnell, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, Meyer L. Prentis, Remus Robinson, M.D., James Couzens, Sidney Barthwell, Henry Ford, Joe Louis, Horace Rackham and Berry Gordy, Jr.
